Hilton Head Golf

Hilton Head Island golf was destined to become a common phrase. In the fall of 1969, when Arnold Palmer walked down the eighteenth of the Sea Pines Ocean to don the first Heritage jacket, the seed was planted. Hilton Head - golf was to become a linked phrase. Indeed, the Island would become more than a residential community with a few golf courses. It would nurture its own style, the Hilton Head Island golf style. Now, Hilton Head Island golf is making the transition from a common phrase to near redundant phrase.

As Hilton Head became known, more courses were constructed and villa complexes with names like St Andrews, Inverness, Muirefield, and Gleneagle began to line the fairways. Golf Architects like Jones, Dye, Cobb, and Fazio were making names for themselves with the construction of some of the countries best tracts. In the past thirty years, the trend has continued. The Island has become a who’s who of golf. When reviewing the  Hilton Head Island golf courses you will notice familiar names. Nicklaus, Player, Palmer, Hills, Johnston, Cupp, McCumber, Love and Norman have now become aligned with the Hilton Head golf scene. It is a time when, one says "Hilton Head", golf is mentally pictured.

The Heritage is no longer played on Sea Pines first course, but rather its namesake, The Heritage, AKA The Harbour Town Golf Links. Its fabled eighteenth walk to the candy -striped lighthouse is now as recognizable as the Masters' azaleas or Pebble Beach’s pounding surf. But, there is more to Hilton Head golf than just the Heritage. Once you have played some of the Island’s varied courses you will understand. There are ample Hilton Head Island golf courses, giving the player numerous options. Whether a scratch player, looking for a challenge, or a  duffer, who doesn’t know the difference between a mashie and a brassie, there is an Island golf course you will enjoy and remember.

Hilton Head golf tips.

Check the Island Packet for golf specials or any local tournaments. When, calling for “same day” reservations ask the pro shop about last minute T time deals or any current specials like twilight or mid day.

Check conditions. Although, Hilton Head golf courses are normally in great condition there are times some get more play than others and may be less great. A good place to do this is at the Practice range. Don’t forget these practice ranges. The practice range is a great spot to get the feel of the Club, and, Hilton Head golf courses have some super practice facilities.

The evenings are a great time to play; the courses are not crowded, and in the summer one can still get in eighteen teeing off after five. No matter where you play you will witness the Hilton Head golf style, and you are bound to have fun.
