Palmetto Dunes

 In the early seventies The Greenwood Development became involved with a development in the middle of Hilton Head Island, called Palmetto Dunes. It was to be a 2000 acre combined residential and  resort area. Today this site with more than three miles of beachfront is one of the Island’s premier destination resorts. It is the home to three signature championship golf courses designed by noted golf architects,  Jones, Fazio, and Hills. Additionally, the Tennis Center, initially nurtured by the Australian’s Laver and Emerson, is one of the Country’s topped ranked tennis centers. 

An added amenity is the resorts drainage system. Incorporated into a  twelve miles long  lagoon system, it offers a great place to fish or boat. Palmetto Dunes is home to two of the Island’s best hotels, The Marriott, and the Hilton. Both properties are ocean front resorts. 

Palmetto Dunes Resort is shaped like a T. Queens Folly Road leads from the Parkway to the beach, and then branches to the North and the South. The North side is primarily residential with some of the Island’s most sought after Palmetto Dunes oceanfront homes. The Southern resort area is comprised of homes, and many luxurious Palmetto Dunes ocean front condominiums and villas.

In 1983 Shelter Cove Marina opened. Situated across the Parkway from the PD entrance, it is designed as a Mediterranean harbour village. With restaurants and shops lining the yacht filled marina, Shelter Cove has turned into a great mingling spot.  During the season there are free fireworks on Tuesday evenings, and Shannon Tanner does his family show nightly.
